Explainer: Therapists at Red Rock Counseling

Curious about the therapists at Red Rock Counseling? This explainer breaks down the differences and similarities between graduate level student therapists, pre-licensed state interns, and fully licensed therapists.

Graduate Student Therapists: Both MFT (also called CFT for those in UNLV’s program) and CPC graduate students at Red Rock Counseling are at the masters level of training in their respective areas of therapeutic practice. They bring this training into their local communities with practical experiences while working with their clients. All are completing their final year or semester of their masters program and work with their clients under the direct supervision of a fully licensed therapist. Each of the graduate student therapists completing their practicum or internship at Red Rock Counseling are thoroughly dedicated to maintaining high ethical standards and providing a safe, inclusive space and compassionate care for each of their clients.

Pre-Licensed/State Intern Therapists: Pre-Licensed/State interns have graduated from their respective educational institute and are in the process of being licensed therapists. The State of Nevada requires therapists to be interns for two years before being fully licensed. During those two years, State interns must complete 3000 supervised hours and have both a primary and secondary supervisor. Pre-licensed therapists at the state internship level are able to see clients as a privately practicing therapist.

Licensed Therapists: Fully licensed therapists in the state of Nevada have graduated from a masters level graduate program at minimum in their respective area of therapeutic practice and have completed the required minimum of two years as state interns as well as the 3000 hours required to attain full licensure. Fully licensed therapists must practice as such for a minimum of three years to be able to supervise student therapists and therapists completing their state internship requirements.
